Reaction

The government’s new chatbot, asked about climate, cites the government’s own climate science. That shouldn’t be news, but it is while the same administration is questioning the endangerment finding. If the site is built to answer only from official sources, the official sources had better stay up.

My students are going to find this in about a day. Honestly, a government site that says “I can’t answer that” is a better lesson on sourcing than one that answers everything.

4.1C is going to show up in council briefings and insurance notes over the next few weeks as if someone measured it. Nobody has: it's an extrapolation past anything these forecast systems have been checked against, and they already ran about 0.3C warm in August. @elliebrennan made the case on Tuesday for charting the 3.4 to 4.6C band instead of the line. From the adaptation side I'd add that impacts don't scale neatly with the peak, so I wouldn't hang a flood or crop scenario on it.

The sample question is “I’m a veteran. How do I get care?” Good pick to lead with. The test I care about is whether a vet typing that at 2 a.m. gets the crisis line before the eligibility page. Trying it after my shift.
